Mobile Technology for Community Health (MoTeCH)
is an mHealth initiative introduced in Ghana in response
to challenges experienced by rural communities (1316).
MoTeCH has two components: Mobile Midwife and
Nurse Application, and this study focuses on the former.
Mobile Midwife is a mobile application that sends
timely messages in local languages to specified clients,
mostly expectant mothers and new parents. The messages
give relevant information concerning health and notify
the client in instances of a missed appointment (8, 13).
Currently the MoTeCH project in Ghana covers four out
of a total of ten regions: the UpperWest, Central, Greater
Accra, and Volta Regions. MoTeCH was first implemented
in the Upper East Region of Ghana, in 2010.
Coincidentally, free maternal health care services were
also introduced in four regions, including the Upper East
Region and Central Region (study setting). These regions
were rated among the poorest regions, recording the
lowest levels in use of ANC services
