Market forces do not in and of themselves guarantee smallholders’
inclusion in modern supply chains. When possible,
companies might seek to source from larger producers, who
can deliver economies of scale, often are better educated,
and typically also have better access to finance. Including
smallholders can present significant challenges for both the
agribusiness and smallholder, but a strong business case can
be made for both sides to work together (table 10.1 summarizes
the advantages and challenges).
