paranoid schizophrenia,15% of schizoaffective
disorder and 7% of psychosis NOS. The mean
duration of the hallucinations at the time of
inclusion was about 11 years (SD ¼ 10.0). The
mean age was 36 years (SD ¼ 11.2),54% was
male; 42% were living alone and 33% with others
(parent,partner,others) in the community,while
24% lived in sheltered accommodations under
mental health care supervision. As for their occupational
status,only three subjects (4%) held a
paid job,while 84% received a welfare,unemployment
or disability pension. The lifetime average
number of admissions was 3. There were no
significant differences between the experimental
and control group on any of the sociodemographic,
diagnostic,medication or medical history variables,
including total admissions,in-patient days,
days in sheltered accommodation or out-patient
contacts (Table 1).
