This is mainly pearlite with about 5% of pro-eutectoid ferrite as small areas.Etching in hot alkaline sodium picrate confirms the nature of the ferrite, as the white regions are unaffected. Approximately 40% of the pearlite is resolved by a 4 mm. objective. In general, there is no obvious directionality to the structure, although faint light striations may be seen on the etched surface. However, in some specimens a segregated band may be present, giving a region containing a large amount of ferrite.
