AXS: The last time we spoke was back in October, what’s been going on in your career since then?
Christina: Since the Hard Rock and Prizeo? I’ve been doing a lot of shows and performing my originals along with the covers that I did on “The Voice.” This is definitely the most consecutive performing I’ve done in a while, it’s cool to play shows every other night.
AXS: And tonight, you’re in Freehold, New Jersey for your concert at iPlay America. You’re originally from around here, aren’t you?
Christina: Yes, I’m from Marlton, New Jersey and I haven’t been back here for two years, so I’m really excited about tonight. Besides my fans, I’m going to get to see a lot of my family whom I haven’t seen in a while!
AXS: So, how did this gig come together? Did you know you were coming home for the holidays and decide to book this show?
Christina: I was actually not even planning on coming home for Christmas, at all, so when I found out about the show being booked, I was all excited, “Oh, I’m going to go home early for Christmas and surprise my friends and my family!”
AXS: On a side note, my son was hoping to come to the show tonight, but he injured himself pretty badly while LARPing!
Christina: LARPing?! Really?! I’ve never been, but to be honest I’ve always wanted to! LARPing is cool. I kind of dated this guy in high school... and that’s all he did on the weekends.
AXS: Wait, back up a minute... how do you “kind of date” someone?
Christina: Well, it was a really complicated situation, I was young and I wasn’t really allowed to date, but we kind of did anyway, so, that’s how you kind of date someone (laughing). Long story short, he super hardcore cheated on me... so I wrote a song about him!
AXS: And that’s what launched your songwriting career, right? (laughing)
Christina: Well, the song I’m playing tonight called “Liar Liar”... it’s about him. And, he knows it, too!
AXS: Is he going to be here, tonight?
Christina: No, no, no! He would never come to my show. I promise. (laughing)
AXS: Later in January, you’re leaving for a European tour, do I have that right?
Christina: Yes, I’m going to Europe, which I am really excited about because I’ve only been to London once and I barely even count it as being there because I was only there for such a small amount of time. But this time, I’m going for a month! The tour starts in Finland on January 26 and it ends in Glasgow on February 25, so it’s a solid month-long tour.
AXS: I know you can’t really talk much beyond this European tour because plans are still being made regarding other aspects of your career... but what do you hope happens in 2015?
Christina: There will be new music in 2015, for sure. And, I’m hoping to do a Christmas album next year, too, because I’ve always done Christmas covers, but I’ve never done a whole album.
AXS: Speaking of Christmas covers, that YouTube video of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” that you did for Tyler Ward for the World Food Program is so moving, it’s like going to church!
Christina: That’s one of my favorite Christmas songs ever! That and “Oh Holy Night.”
AXS: Your voice is so incredible on that song! What was the recording process like for that video?
Christina: Funny story about that cover... I lost my voice about two weeks prior and I already knew that I was going to be doing that Christmas song for this particular project, so I was freaking out! I kind of got my voice back, but it was in no way ready to belt -- and, it was a no instruments, all voice cover of the song, too! What was I supposed to do? I super prepped for it and when I got there, I stood on this holiday set in front of a microphone, we put a little bit of reverb on my voice, and I just sang. By the end, my voice was shot! I was so nervous for that.
AXS: You nervous? How could someone with a voice as amazing as yours ever be nervous?
Christina: I get nervous because everyone expects me to be good! If my voice starts wearing out on me, it’s embarrassing!
AXS: I guess I could see that, you do have a reputation to live up to. Did this experience cause you to change your approach to singing or anything?
Christina: I didn’t change my technique, if that’s what you mean, but I had to be quiet for a while ... I couldn’t even talk, which was very hard for me! But I did get plenty of rest because sleep is one of the most foolproof ways to heal your voice. And, fun fact, that is one of the fastest healing parts of your body! All you have to do is shut up and it will heal... but I have an issue doing that sometimes! (laughing)
AXS: You’re getting ready to go perform, we talked about coming home, your European tour, how to take care of your voice, your hopes for 2015 ... and we even talked about LARPing! Is there anything else we should mention?
Christina: My single, “Must Be Love,” is out now and you can find it on iTunes or Spotify, but other than that, that’s about it!
