Knowledge creation is a spiraling process of interactions between explicit
and tacit knowledge.3 The interactions between these kinds of knowledge
lead to the creation of new knowledge. The combination of the two categor-
ies makes it possible to conceptualize four conversion patterns. Figure 1
shows the characteristics of the four steps in the knowledge conversion
process. Each of the four conversion modes can be understood as processes
of self-transcendence. The SECI model serves only as an outline for know-
ledge creation and the idea of self-transcendence is quite abstract. However.
it can be put into practice.
