This document is a literature review which compiles pertinent information
on sea star control methods that are used around the world. Included are
methods to control sea star predation on a variety of molluscs, including scallops,
oysters, and mussels, for both bottom and off bottom cultures. A summary of
each control method, its efficiency, advantages and disadvantages and cost, is
presented to assist aquaculturists/industry to select a method that will work best
for their conditions. Ultimately, the success of a control method is dependent on
its efficiency, practicality and cost. With some of the methods discussed in this
paper, sea stars are collected without being destroyed. Therefore, potential uses
of sea stars are discussed in this paper as a means to recover costs associated
with the control measures.
