The base-line characteristics of the people in the intervention and control groups were similar (Table 1).
Survival at three years was also similar in the two
groups, with 24 deaths (11 percent) in the intervention
group and 26 (13 percent) in the control group (odds
ratio, 0.8; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.5 to 1.5;
P0.8). Vital status and location of residence were
known for all participants at three years.
