Evidence that children fail to drink sufficiently resulted from a
survey of British school children (Kaushik, Mullee, Bryant, & Hill,
2007). Schools were distinguished in terms of their drinking policy:
those who prohibited water in the classroom; those with limited
access where water was allowed in the class but not on the desk;
those with free access to water with a bottle on the desk. Eighty
one percent of the children in schools who prohibited the
introduction of water into the class, and 80% of children who
had limited access to water, drank less than the recommended
amount. These figures compared with 46.5% of those given free
access to water who drank less than recommended.
