Noise on digitized radiographic images usually appears as randomly dispersed pixels having different values of intensity in relation to their neighbors [2]. Low-pass filters are usually employed to reduce the noise and the technique of extending the gray scale histogram [2,4] for contrast optimization.
After digitalization, the radiographic patterns were processed using an Image Pro Plus 4.0 (Media Cybernetcs) program. A median [2,13,17,18] type filter was used to smooth out the unpredictable noise present and the histogram of gray levels extended to improve the contrasts of the images, making it easier to see the weld line and to detect defects.
