Routine visual inspection is a key part of pit wall monitoring used at all open pit porphyry
mines in BC. Visual inspection has an advantage that everyone working in the
mine can play an observer role. Mines offer training to personnel working in the open
pits so they are better able to identify conditions that merit a notification to engineers
responsible for pit wall stability. In addition, geotechnical engineers, mining engineers
and technicians conduct more formal pit wall inspections on a weekly basis.
