More than seven centuries old, Thailand’s
monarchy is not always well understood by
foreigners. This section contextualises and
explains some of the key institutions and
trappings of the crown, beginning with a
detailed description of how the crown’s assets
have been managed in Crown Property. This
piece is followed by essays on the law of lèsemajesté,
the Privy Council, and the process of
succession. Many of the monarchy’s rituals
draw from ancient Buddhist and Hindu rites.
In recent centuries, the crown has evolved to
include more Western royal influences. This
section concludes with an overview of the key
regalia, ceremonies and traditions.
