In Freeheld, a movie based on actual events, Julianne Moore plays Laurel Hester, a strong Jersey lieutenant, who falls deeply in love with Stacie Andree, played by Ellen Page. The two form a domestic partnership, and seemed to be happy until Hester is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.
And on top of that horrific news, Hester and Andree were also informed that Hester’s pension could not go to her domestic partner like it would if she were married to a man.
Steve Carell joins their fight as “a middle-class, Jewish homosexual from New Jersey,” which is just fine with us, sweetheart.
Make sure you’re stocked up on tissues when Freeheld opens on October 2.
