Sediment cores were extracted via a piston corer, which involved hammering a PVC tube into the sediment, and using suction from the tightened piston located within the tube to hold the sediment in place while the tube was extracted. Once extracted, the sediment in the tube was extruded in situ and divided into the following sections: 0-1, 1-3, 3-5, 5-10, and 10-15 cm These sediment samples were then placed into sterile sample bags on ice.
