In the present study, a novel application of MFC technology to
oxidative fermentation was investigated as a means of coproducing
a useful material and electricity. Vinegar production, i.e.,
acetic acid fermentation, was chosen as an initial and model
useful material production process for combination with electricity
production using MFC technology. The simultaneous
progress of acetic acid fermentation and electricity generation
was confirmed (Figs. 2 and 6). From these results, the possibility
for coproduction of vinegar and electricity by the application of
MFC technology was demonstrated successfully. To the best of our
knowledge, this is the first report of the application of MFC
technology to the coproduction of a useful material and electricity
by oxidative fermentation.
