By converting the effectiveness data to a common unit of measure,
like QALYs gained, CUA is able to incorporate simultaneously both the
changes in the quantity of life (mortality) and the changes in the
quality of life (morbidity).
• In the QALY approach, the quality adjustment is based on a set of
values or weights called utilities, one for each possible health state,
which reflect the relative desirability of the health state.
• Because of the similarities between CUA and CEA some authors do
not distinguish between the two, particularly in the USA. For example,
Weinstein and Stason (1977) and Gold et al. (1996b) treat CUA as a
particular case of CEA.
• Thus, be aware in reading the literature that CUA may appear under
other labels.

analysis? (cont’d)
