Tide gauge records from the Malay–Thai
peninsula indicate rates of sea-level rise over the past ca. 50 years to be
near the long-term global average, 0 to 3 mm/yr (Yanagi and Akaki,
1994; Woodruff et al., 2013). In agreement are tide gauge records
from 1985 to 2000 AD around the coast of peninsular Malaysia that indicate
relative sea-level rise of 1.7 ± 0.6 mm yr−1 on the west coast and
3.4 ± 0.2 mm yr−1 on the east coast (JUPEM, 2000). Significant spatial
variation in rates of sea-level change in the Gulf of Thailand region on
the eastern margin of the Sunda Shelf have also been demonstrated
using GPS-corrected tide gauge data and multi-satellite altimetry
(Trisirisatayawong et al., 2011).
