Compost marketed as mulch is normally made from a higher proportion of green waste and
woody materials and will therefore have a lower nutrient content.
It may be screened to remove large particles and sometimes the finer material because the
primary purpose is to provide a protective blanket over the soil that reduces moisture losses,
moderates soil temperatures and reduces weed growth.
