A pervasive human concern is establishing and
maintaining relatedness to others, social institutions,
environments, and self (Berlin & Johnson,
1989; Birtchnell, 1987; Gilligan, 1982; Wynne,
1984). One component of connecting one’s self
into the fabric of surrounding people, places, and
things is a sense of belonging. Maslow (1954)
identified belonging as a basic human need, ranking
it third in his hierarchy.
