An ongoing research project [25] which is carried
out by the Faculty of Rural & Surveying
Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
for the Hellenic Railway Organization
(OSE), deals with the mapping of the railway
network using GPS technology. The end product
of the specific research is the development of a
‘‘tool’’ for mapping and monitoring of the OSE
network and also for the aid of the decision
making process concerning infrastructure and
operation issues. The project is composed of two
phases. Phase A includes the mapping of the railway
network using GPS and also the utilization of
GIS technology for the production of the necessary
maps. Phase B includes the development of
the appropriate software and the creation of data
bases with the geometrical and operational characteristics
of the railway network.
