Sustainability is defined as the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting
natural resources, thereby supporting a long-term ecological balance. Our ambitions report
outlines each area where we are investing to improve our environmental performance.
There has been significant and ongoing investment in scientific research into emissions attributed
to container ocean transportation. Emission calculations vary wildly between associations and
carriers. Whilst MSC has been an active participant in various associations, it is for this reason that
we have not published an emissions calculator. Quite simply there is a vast amount of scientific
data yet to be collected and analysed, and we intend to continue learning along with our
partners. After 12 years of work to improve sustainability, the industry still has a long way to go.
Our Sustainability Ambitions 2020 plan sets ambitious targets on a path towards an improved
carbon footprint. These goals have now been implemented into tangible actions in accordance
with our corporate philosophy ‘Think innovatively and act sustainably’.
The graph below illustrates the various inputs we have into our sustainability initiatives.
