Secondly, the ‘ivory tower’ academicism, and associated elitism of this position is morally unsound. It denies that mathematics has any involvement in, or responsibility for broader, social issues. However mathematics is but one part of knowledge, just as mathematicians are but one segment of society, and there is no moral basis for denying the responsibility of the part to the greater whole, in either case. To base a perspective on the notion that mathematics is intrinsically good, in some sense, and then to deny responsibility if it’s outcomes should be bed, through a negative impact on the lives of others in society or school, is morally irresponsible and incorrect. No area of knowledge or life has the right to this royal prerogative, in a democratic society all are accountable.
