In this work, we report that, when grown in the presence
of salt, D. hansenii accumulates higher amounts of Na1 than
S. cerevisiae, both in the cytoplasm and in vacuolar compartments.
We also cloned and expressed in S. cerevisiae a
gene orthologous to NHX1, and we present data supporting
the notion that this is an important salt tolerance determinant
that regulates intracellular content and the distribution
of Na1 and K1.
