Thirdly, compliance with the legislation on labeling of
food is high especially for durable commodities, but low
for perishable food items. Misbranding, that is, having
false and misleading statements on food and drug labels
is seen as a criminal act especially for product bearing
health claims. Basic information required by law on food
labels, according to the Oxford Handbook of Nutrition and
Dietetics (OHND), include product name, ingredient list
and quantity, qualitative ingredient declaration, allergenic
ingredients and shelf life. Others are storage instructions,
name and address of manufacturers, packers or seller,
country of origin, weight or volume and instructions for
use (OHND, 2006).
