Per capita energy consumption in Ethiopia is approximately
16 gigajoules (GJ) (World Bank, 2011). An estimated 95% of the
energy supply in Ethiopia comes from biomass sources and, in
2007, indoor air pollution was responsible for more than 50,000
deaths and nearly 5% of the national burden of disease was due to
solid fuel use (WHO, 2007). 85% of the population lives in rural
areas in sub-standard housing with poor sanitation conditions
(Kumie and Berhan, 2003).
