There would seem to be room for inconsistencies here among these three facets of the self-concept. However, Rogers argued that the self, although fluid, is ideally a consistent pattern, an organized whole. Thus all possible aspects of the self strive toward consistency. For example, someone who considers himself or herself to have absolutely no aggressive feelings toward others dares not express any need for aggression--at least not in any obvious and direct manner. All behavior must be similarly consistent with one's self-concept. (The consequences of inconsistency or incongruity will be discussed later.)
