Special Requirements: Some applications of treated
wood have unique requirements for preservatives, species and
process limitations of specific commodities. These include
the following:

4.1 Drying After Treatment. Drying after treatment may
be required for structural strength or dimensional stability.
Building codes may require drying after treatment where
wood treated with waterborne preservatives is used in
enclosed locations where drying in service cannot be readily
achieved. The moisture content in each piece of lumber
shall not exceed 19%, or that moisture content permitted by
grading rules for the species and size specified to be dried.

4.2 Lumber and Plywood for Permanent Wood
Foundation (PWF) UC4B Retentions. Permanent wood
foundations are constructed under the jurisdiction of building
codes and may require code approved quality marks. Use of
stainless steel fasteners is recommended for PWF.

conform to US Product Standard PS-1 with exterior glue and
softwood plies only. Plywood shall bear the mark of or have
a certificate of inspection issued by a qualified plywood
inspection agency.
4.2.5 Marking. Each piece of lumber and plywood treated
as Permanent Wood Foundation material under AWPA
Standards shall be marked by a qualified inspection agency to
identify the preservative, retention, Use Category (UC) level,
year of treatment, and the producer. The material also shall
be marked as Permanent Wood Foundation and have the
notation ADAT or KDAT to show the lumber or plywood has
been dried after treatment.

4.3 Lumber, Timbers, and Decking for Bridges,
Structural Members, Cribbing and Culverts, UC4C

4.2.2 Heartwood Limit. The heartwood content in lumber
from Southern Pine, Red Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Patula Pine,
and Scots Pine-Ger treated as Permanent Wood Foundation
material shall not exceed 20% of the cross sectional area at
either end of each piece except that precision end trimmed
(PET) or 8 foot 2x6 or 2x8 basement studs shall have no
heartwood limitation provided each piece is legibly marked
"Stud Use Only" or "Basement Stud".
4.2.3 Drying After Treatment. Drying of Permanent Wood
Foundation lumber after treatment is required to assure
dimensional stability and structural strength. Moisture
content shall not exceed 19% in each piece of lumber. The
moisture content in each piece of permanent wood foundation
plywood shall not exceed 18%. The moisture content limit
for PWF lumber and plywood may not be waived.
4.2.4 Grade. Lumber used as Permanent Wood Foundation
material shall be manufactured and graded in accordance with
4.3.1 For Allowable Species and Preservatives listed under
4.3 use UC4B retentions for PCP-A and PCP-C and UC4C
retentions for all other allowable species and preservative
combinations.

4.7 Decking Materials. This section covers special
retention requirements for decking surfaces and other
associated decking specialties such as spindles, railings, ball
tops, and lattice. These are exterior, above ground
applications where the useful life of the treated product is
generally limited by deterioration of appearance from
weathering. This listing is only for sawn lumber less than
50 mm (2.0 in.) in thickness and 150 mm (6.0 in.) in width
and for use in Deterioration Zones 1 through 4 as shown in
Standard U1, Commodity Specification D. The original
reason for the higher retentions than normal for above
ground uses was to compensate for the smaller (5mm) assay
zone for this material, which coincides with the smaller
(5mm) penetration depth requirement (See Standard T1
Section 8 A 13).

This Commodity Specification is promulgated pursuant to a consensus procedure.
1. Introduction: Commodity Specification B covers
preservative pressure treatment of wood posts. It includes
general requirements, minimum preservative retention
requirements for each Use Category, special requirements
and special information. Penetration requirements and assay
zones are tabulated in the Processing and Treatment
Standard (T1).
1.1 Posts covered under Commodity Specification B are
round, half round and quarter round less than 16' in length.
Commodity Specification B also includes playground
equipment, both sawn and round, and round building posts
and poles.
1.2 The preservative retention and penetration assigned to
the Use Category levels in Commodity Specification B are
minimum retention and penetration depths for the
commodity, preservative and species treated. They have
been found to be satisfactory for service in their Use
Category. Retentions may be raised above the minimum
and penetration depths increased beyond the minimum but
the need for such changes should be demonstrated and be
