IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOL HEALTH
Effective school-based asthma programs improve health outcomes for children as well as support schools in helping students reach their academic potential, by supporting higher rates of attendance and decreased health care utilization, and successful implementation and institutionalization of these programs helps to maintain positive outcomes. Sustaining school-based programs that were found to be effective in improving health outcomes for children—such as the CALM program in the state of Missouri—should be a priority, in order to reach more children in need of care. Schoolbased programs reach more children than programs in clinical or other settings as they interact with more children, and with much more frequency, thereby having the potential to improve the health of large numbers of children.
