Going back to the early history of Buddhism, Emperor Asoka, who, after a bloody but successful military campaign, ruled over more than two thirds of the Indian subcontinent, suffered great remorse for the suffering that he had caused. 1. Asoka ordered that banyan trees and mango groves be planted, rest house built and wells dug every half mile along the main roads.

Of course the most ethical document that has been agreed upon by member states of The United Nations General Assembly, is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948 at the Palais de Chaillot, Paris. Of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled. The declaration consists of thirty articles which have been elaborated in subsequent international treaties, regional human rights instruments, national constitutions, and other laws.
