Many movie stars have what we have called star personae, clusters of associations
that they have accumulated over their careers in virtue of the roles
(and the kind of roles) they have played. Viewers often use these star personae
to fill-out their understanding of and response to the characters the
actors are playing in movies that represent utterly distinct fictional worlds –
as the fictional world of Rio Bravo is distinct from that of The Shootist.
Furthermore, it seems that viewers are intended to do this by the established
practices of casting.
