SMART is an acronym that we use to really describe the goal-setting process.
The S stands for specific, so you want your goals to be kind of narrowed down and specific.
The M stands for measurable, so you want to say you know at least two days a week I’m going to try walk 10 minutes a day.
The A stands for achievable and it’s really you know looking at yourself and saying yes, I’m able to achieve this--this goal, that this really will work with me.
So you’ve already defined what you know that you’re going to be able to accomplish.
The R stands for realistic, being realistic; if you know that you know you work 12--14 hours a day, it might not be a realistic goal to say that you’re going to go straight after work to a health club. It might be something that you’ll do in the morning or on your lunch.
And then the T stands for timely or time frame on that, so you’re going to say to yourself you know I’m going to maybe not drink soda before I got to bed at least three nights a week.
So I think using the SMART approach is really a good way because it really helps you kind of define those goals and really make those goals work for you.
And then with collaboration and discussion, we talk about what is it going to take to get there? So it’s really up to you and your healthcare team to really narrow the scope a little bit so that you can kind of put your arms around it and really start defining more specific goals that you can work on.
