Concerns about this economic phenomenon are widely shared. Indian activist Vandana Shiva maintains
that the economic inequality between the affluent industrialized countries and the poor Third World ones
was produced by 500 years of colonialism and the continued creation of mechanisms for draining wealth out
of the Third World. Moreover, she accuses the industrialized world of using contemporary intellectual property
regimes to further this kind of exploitation. [FN53] For Shiva and others, India stands only to lose when
multinational corporations come seeking short-term monetary gain. [FN54] Similarly, at the *288 United
