Forget the stories of snake charmers performing seemingly dangerous acts. This festival is about real worm charmers. You have to come to the village of Blackawton in the South Hams to believe it. While the real charm of this festival lies in its objective – to extract largest number of worms from the grassland – the task is anything but easy. There’s only one rule: you can’t dig up the turf. So, how do you go about charming the worms? In order to bring the worms to the surface, people try to seep in a liquid made of beer, water, and sugar. Remember, the liquid shouldn’t do the worms any harm. Another way to entice the creatures to come to the surface is by playing musical instruments.
