At Khmer Creations, we are fascinated by this time honoured process that epitomises the Cambodian craft scene. Using this luxurious, yet readily available raw material in dynamic and intriguing ways, has defined many our jewellery lines.
Historically, the ancient Khmers took silk weaving to world renowned levels, crafting some of the most complex and beautiful silk textiles the world had ever seen. But in more recent years, this time honoured skill was devastated by decades of civil war, and particularly during the Pol Pot era when artists of all traditions were killed. Thanks to the few remaining artisans with the traditional knowledge and skills or silk production, the art been revived and passed on to women of the next generation.
The last decade has seen a rapid increase in silk production and a surge in demand for what is known around the world again, as some of the finest silk. We feel very honoured to work with such a beautiful and sustainable raw material that’s wrapped in centuries of history.
