Transverse sections were taken at various locations along the
weld, and samples for metallographic examination were prepared
using standard procedures namely grinding, polishing and etching.
Each specimen was examined using optical microscopy to measure
the penetration, width and area of the weld. Mechanical properties,
tensile properties and average hardness, were used to examine the
metallurgical properties of the welds. The configuration and size of
the tensile specimens were in accordance with ASTM E8. The hardness
of the welded specimens was measured with a micro Vickers
hardness tester. The indentations on each sample were performed
at a load of 200 gf for 15 s.
