Transformational leadership is viewed as the most prominent topic in current research and theories of
leadership (Bass, 1998, 1999). The difference between transformational and transactional leadership lies in
the way of motivating others. A transformational leader’s behavior originates in the personal values and
beliefs of the leader and motivates subordinates to do more than expected (Bass, 1985). Burns identified
transformational leadership as a process where, “one or more persons engage with others in such a way that
leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality” (1978, p. 20).
