Artist's Statement
As far back as I can remember I've always been involved in artistic endeavors. As an Art Major in college I experimented with all sorts of mediums from drawing and painting to ceramics, sculpture, silkscreen, batik and photography.
I learned that my abilities are strongest in the two dimensional world of art and spent many years producing and selling batiks of landscapes. At the same time I was also involved in photography, eventually setting up my own black and white darkroom, and experimenting with colorization using high contrast photos and oil based materials.
My focus has gradually shifted to oil painting and encaustics but my photography plays a major role in the process. With the exception of commissioned pieces, all of my paintings are completely original, painted either on site, (plein air), or from photographs that I have personally taken of the subject at hand.
I find it very important to have an emotional connection to that which I am painting. For me that occurs from actually being present and seeing the subject with my own eyes. This allows me to paint the images from my own perspective. In addition the emotions that are generated from my time spent in a certain place, as well as the emotions and memories that occur during the painting process, all become a part of the final piece. In this way each painting is unique and one of a kind.
Personal Background
I am lucky to live on a beautiful piece of property in Rockland County, New York, with my husband, and three daughters who come and go with the wind! When not in New York you can find me at our home in Vermont. We also share our abode with a dog, four cats and a menagerie of wildlife. Gardening takes much of my time in the spring and summer but provides endless inspiration for painting.
