A separate clade that included Ptilocercus, Cynocephalus and Palaechthon converged with bats in developing gliding membranes. Bats did not evolve from insectivores, primates or edentates.
Bats evolved wings in a different fashion than pterosaurs, which originated with bipedal lizards in the fenestrasaur clade and birds which originated with bipedal dinosaurs in the theropod clade.
