3. Results and discussion
3.1. Antioxidant activity of carotenoid extracts
The results of antioxidant activity of the extracts, determined by
the photochemiluminescence assay for both lipophilic and hydrophilic
activities, are shown in Fig. 1. The lipophilic antioxidant activity
was higher for all the samples; however, the hydrophilic
antioxidant activity of S_E could not be detected, probably because
of incompatibility between the sample and the reagents derived
from the higher lipid content of this extract as compared to the
tomato one. This was expected owing to the lipophilic nature of the
