I think it’s fitting that my first real post should be something that is fundamental to our workflow, but continues to impress me in how it has revolutionised compositing – floating point numbers!
The tl;dr is that life has become much easier since most compositing packages have adopted floating point colour as a standard. It has made the compositing workflow a lot more flexible and a lot less prone to image degradation and artifacting. Floating point colour works so well that you probably don’t need to worry too much about it. All of this is known as colour depth
