Provider motivation can play a role in the adoption of a new
practice. Researchers discuss adoption of a new innovation into
practice. They describe finding that people choose to adopt be-
cause of a perceived advantage. In this particular project, the
perceived advantage of adopting the new innovation may not
have been shared by all staff members involved. The perceived
advantage of this project is the improvement of exercise frequency in patients with PAD and IC symptoms. If the program
enrollment period had been longer and the providers had more
time to incorporate the practice into their routine, enrollment
rates might have been higher. In addition, if the providers could
see over time how the patients who initially started the program
symptoms were affected, adoption rates may have increased. The
project was directed to change provider behavior, so that patients
can receive consistent information and recommendations about
PAD and the benefits of exercise. This particular finding high-
lights the challenges to having a group adopt a new behavior.
