Abstract
There are several diagnoses for patients who present with ulceration
in the sexual health clinic or primary care. In this article, syphilis and
lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) are discussed. Syphilis and LGV
are sexually transmitted infections that may present in various guises
and sometimes present as co-infections. They are both serious
infections that occur with a high incidence among men who have
sex with men. Providing the patient with an environment in which
sexual practice can be discussed with openness and honesty will
enable the health professional to diagnose and treat appropriately.
The treatment options and management should be discussed, and
education and awareness relating to high-risk sexual behaviour will
prevent onward transmission and long-term sequelae
