In the 1970s, this scenario changed dramatically. Increasingly concerned about health and
physical fitness, millions of Americans took up jogging, Nautilus workouts, and aerobics. Greater
affluence and leisure time, as well as greater sports activity by women, also led to increased
participation. Industry sources estimated that half of all Americans—primarily the younger, more
affluent half—were active exercisers by 1982. These athletes wore a new generation of sports shoes
and clothing; products designed to aid performance and prevent injury.
