he number of people with dementia worldwide
continues to rise and in the UK is estimated at
800000. Of people living in care homes, 80% are
believed to have dementia (Alzheimer’s Society, 2014).
At least one behavioural and psychological symptom
of dementia (BPSD) is experienced by approximately
90% of people with the condition (Barbosa et al,
2014). BPSD include psychotic symptoms, agitation
such as motor restlessness, shouting and anxiety, and
mood disorders including depression, apathy and
hyperactivity (Alzheimer’s Society, 2014)
High levels of antipsychotic medications continue
to be prescribed to up to one in six people with
dementia in nursing homes (Guthrie et al, 2010)
despite side-effects being recorded repeatedly, and
these medications being contraindicated in the treatment
of BPSD. Considering the distress and difficulty
BPSD causes for people with dementia and their carers,
a variety of approaches and interventions are
needed to ensure appropriate and individual care is
given (Brodaty et al, 2003).
NHS Protect (2013) emphasises that there is ‘always
a cause of clinical related challenging behaviour’.
