The purpose of inoculating LAB is to make a dominant
population in epiphytic microbes of ensiling material, promote
lactic acid fermentation for restraining generation of
undesired microbes. LAB produces sufficient lactic acid
and decreases pH below 4.2 during ensiling, which have
been widely applied in forage and TMR silage (Nishino and
Hattori 2007; Chen et al. 2013). In this study, LP improved
fermentation quality of TMR silage, indicated by increase
in lactic acid content and decrease in pH to 4.4. It can
be explained that high DM content limited the activity of
LP, resulted in ratio of lactic acid to acetic acid being less
than 3:1 which has been used as an indicator of an effective
homolactic acid fermentation
