Sir Edmund’s work with the Himalayan
Trust was a great satisfaction to him,
but there were also times of great
sadness. While building the Paphlu
Hospital in 1975, Sir Edmund was
waiting for his wife, Lady Louise, and
his youngest daughter, sixteen-yearold
Belinda, to arrive by plane. They
never made it. Their plane crashed,
and both were killed. Although
Sir Edmund was devastated, he
continued with his work for the trust.
Within thirty years, the Himalayan
Trust had built twenty-seven schools,
two hospitals, twelve clinics, an
airfield, and several bridges over
raging rivers. Its work still continues.
