The proceedings of the 2008 workshop were published as a
NOAA Technical Memorandum (McElwee and Morishige, 2010).
Here, we provide the first refereed presentation of that information,
detailing the methods and supporting material used to derive
the strategy, as well as the relevance of the results as evidenced by
their relationship and role to both extant and envisioned marine
debris mitigation research and policy. We also expand the strategies
reported by McElwee and Morishige (2010) and identify critical
knowledge gaps and potential actions to address them.
Knowledge gaps and potential actions were developed in part
through the synthesis of background papers prepared by the
2008 workshop participants and through workshop outputs in
which participants identified data gaps and actions to remedy
these gaps and advance our abilities to detect at-sea DFG.
