The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that 1.17million deaths occur each year worldwide due to road traffic accidents. A breakdown of the figure indicates however, that about 70percent of the deaths occur in developing countries. The increased rate of fatal road traffic accident worldwide has been attributed to population explosion and increased motorization. Increased motorization may be characterised briefly as the “automotive revolution”, that is the motorizing of urban population especially in the developing countries. In Karachi, Pakistan the police in 1998, reported 544 deaths and 793 injuries due to RTA while ambulance records noted 343 deaths and 2,048 injuries. The rates for the year 1994 were 184 injuries and 11.2 deaths per 100,000 population (WHO, 1984). Statistics indicate that over 90 percent of traffic accident situations in Nigeria can be attributed to driver errors (Aworemi et al, 2009).
