What does the existence of Chaetomium in a building symbolize?
The presence of these fungi is basically an indication of existing or previous severe moisture problem. Chaetomium is one of
those moulds that need persistent moisture conditions for it to breed. A few spores in pre-remediation air samples are a signal
of a mould problem in the building. Due to the low airborne concentration, Chaetomium is noticed hardly ever in outdoor
samples. So, any spores detected indoors are highly likely to have a source indoors and not outdoors. One can also sample
house dust to find whether Chaetomium is present or not.
