Malnutrition remains underreported in hospital settings,9,12 preventing patients from receiving appropriate treatment including nutrition assessment and intervention. According to the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.), hospitalized patients should be screened for malnutrition risk upon admission, followed by performance of a nutrition assessment for those identified as at risk of malnutrition.13 Screening methods vary in level of detail and ease of use and seek to identify patients who require more in-depth assessment.13 Commonly performed anthropometric and laboratory values used in screening and assessment are displayed in Table 1.
